The event: Phd defense
Erin and her PhD dissertation will be showcasing the relationship and knowledge they've built over the last 5 years by presenting themselves to the public and defending themselves privately to a group of fellow scholars (called a dissertation committee). Everyone is invited to witness the public portion (approximately 45 min). I promise to make this an entertaining and educational affair for audiences of all ages and backgrounds ;)
Following the public portion, Erin, her PhD dissertation, and her committee will convene to a more private setting (i.e., switch zoom rooms) where they will all discuss whether or not these two have put in enough work to be bound for life. I invite all my family, friends, and colleagues to stay in the original zoom room and share stories and good vibes while Erin and her PhD dissertation sweat it out!
Robert and Yvonne Abernethy will be hosting this portion of the event.
Once her committee has made its decision, Erin will announce to the zoom room and through email whether she gets to add "Dr." to her name! Irregardless of the outcome, Erin would like to thank all those loving souls who have supported her throughout her life to get to this wonderful (metaphorical) place!

Their story
Over the last 5 years, Erin and her PhD dissertation have been developing their story together. It's been a winding road of ideas, but they finally settled on three main projects:
1. Diversity and inclusion in a scientific society 2. Dams and aquatic invertebrates in the Colorado River Basin 3. Aquatic insect movements in the Grand Canyon The first project details the demographics and climate of the Society for Freshwater Science. A most excellent group of co-authors worked on this project and came up with suggestions for continued improvement within this scientific society and suggested readings for anyone interested in this type of work. The second project quantified how aquatic invertebrates downstream of 7 large dams in the Colorado River Basin responded to a gradient of daily flow fluctuations (hydropeaking) and distance from dam. I found dominance of certain non-insects and a disproportionate effect on sensitive insects. The third project mapped out the movements of 3 species of insects in the Grand Canyon using nifty next generation sequencing techniques. I found that sometimes the predicted dispersal patterns (based on physical ability) don't always line up with what the genetics say is happening dispersal-wise! To find out more, click through my website and/or attend my defense! Thank you to all the wonderful co-authors and collaborators for each project! |
What's next for these two?
No, it's not big cat research... I took this photo of a tiger in India and just really wanted to fit it into my website.
I have accepted a 1-year post-doctoral position with Elizabeth Anderson at Florida International University (2021). I will be working remotely to examine how race and gender influence water management in Florida and create a framework for incorporating equity practices into this work. Additionally, I am a US Fish and Wildlife Service Directorate Fellow and will be seeking out jobs with this federal conservation agency after my post-doc. |

The satirical theme of this webpage was not condoned by the parents ;)
While they love weddings, they don't care if Erin gets married or not. They just want Dr. Erin to be happy, which she very much is/will be!
